Ultralight Travel: A Brief Introduction
If you’ve heard of ultralight backpacking, you can think of ultralight travel as similar in concept, only instead of applying ultralight principles to camping, trekking, and hiking, we apply them to long-term, remote work, and city-based travel.
We're borrowing some core concepts from minimalist travelers, digital nomads, and ultralight backpackers and combining elements to create a setup that allows you to live out of a backpack full-time.
It’s the ultimate expression of freedom. The ability to go anywhere in the world with just a backpack, the same backpack, regardless of destination, climate, or planned activities.
That was the goal when I started ULT Gear, and it's the same goal today.
Throughout the site you’ll see me reference one-bag travel, and ultralight travel is one-bag travel, with a small distinction.
One-baggers come in many shapes and sizes and often look to optimize their pack for each trip as needed. Ultralight Travel seeks to take it a step further, by creating a single packing list that can be used for any trip, any time, to any place in the world.
It’s an ambitious goal, and we’re not 100% there yet, but it’s getting close.
Right now you can easily pack a simple, <30L backpack with everything you need for warm/tropical and hot climates, but when you're ready to hit cooler temperatures, you'll find your pack expanding, with extra layers, different shoes, and cool weather accessories. Your pack size can quickly double, or even triple, with extra shoes, pants, and jackets; and it's not easy, our goal is to make it easy.
The goal with ULT Gear, and my definition of Ultralight Travel, is the ability to travel (or live) anywhere in the world with a sub-30L backpack.
